The Shower Filter Scams: Unmasking the “15-Stage” Myth

Other stages- Some brands have many stages beyond what I've listed. I would consider these 'filler' stages without much added benefit.

Introduction

You’ve seen them online: shower filters boasting 15 or even 20 stages of filtration, promising to solve every problem. But what if we told you that for most of these brands, it’s a marketing gimmick designed to look impressive, not to actually purify your water? Before you buy, you need to understand that more stages isn’t always better in shower filtration.

The Dilution Problem

When a tiny filter cartridge is crammed with 20 different layers, each layer becomes paper-thin. This means you’re getting an ineffective, microscopic amount of the materials that do the real work. It’s the illusion of performance without any of the substance.

The “Magic” Ingredients Exposed

Many of these filters are packed with filler materials with impressive-sounding names like “maifanshi stone,” “magnetic energy balls,” or “anion spheres.” These are often marketing buzzwords with little scientific evidence to support their effectiveness in the high-flow, high-temperature environment of a shower. In reality, they do very little to remove the harsh chemicals affecting your hair and skin.

The Science of What Actually Works

Independent testing repeatedly shows that for removing chlorine and heavy metals, three materials are king: KDF-55, Activated Carbon and Calcium Sulfite. A filter that uses a potent, effective dose of these key ingredients will always outperform a filter with 15 layers of filler. Quality and quantity of the right materials matter more than the number of stages.

Water Enhancement

Besides removing harmful contaminants, the other important role a good shower filter can have is to enhance your water. Based on our testing and research, there’s really only a couple of things a filter needs to enhance your water properly.

First is to change the pH. Standard tap water is more alkaline than your skin and hair. This means that every time you shower, your 5.5 pH acid mantle is slightly irritated. Over time, this causes all sorts of skin & hair issues. A shower filter can adjust the pH of your water to match the 5.5 pH of your skin, eliminating that irritation.

Another benefit is Vitamin C. Many good shower filters infuse the water with Vitamin C, leaving your skin and hair softer and smoother. Vitamin C is proven to benefit skin and hair, and is a common ingredient in beauty products.

The problem I see with many shower filters is they use too many stages. You don’t need 15 stages to accomplish proper filtration and enhancement. In fact, with that many stages you don’t get enough of the important ingredients which makes the filter pretty ineffective. The best filters I have tested have fewer stages.

The Serei filtered showerhead uses a 5 stage filter that I personally think is the best of both worlds (filtration and enhancement). Some top brands like Eskiin use 15 stage filters which doesn’t leave enough of the good stuff to actually filter the water. Other brands like Jolie only use KDF-55 and Calcium sulfite, which is great for filtration, but they miss out on any water enhancement. Serei seems to have found the sweet spot.

Conclusion

Don’t be fooled by a high number on a box. Look for quality over quantity and choose a filter that focuses on the science-backed ingredients proven to deliver healthier skin and hair.
